¡Felicitaciones a Radio Comunitaria Vieques!

Congratulations to Radio Comunitaria Vieques FM (RCV-FM) in Puerto Rico, a project of the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CRDV), who received their FCC construction permit and are working hard to get on the air. RCV-FM is a regional project that includes the two island municipalities of Puerto Rico – Culebra and Vieques – and the towns of Ceiba and Naguabo on the main island. All four communities were affected for more than half a century by US Navy activities, with grave consequences for the environment and economies of the region. RCV-FM will provide an important educational and organizing tool for the local communities who need a voice on the air.

With a main studio on Vieques and facilities on Culebra and in the area of Ceiba/Naguabo, RCV-FM will transmit its programming – described as La Voz del Este (the Voice of East Puerto Rico)  90,1FM– to continue the work of the CRDV towards peace and justice. The station will include news, music, sports, and the participation of youth, women, labor, ecumenical and environmental groups, among others. They will continue the process of collecting oral histories that they began in collaboration with StoryCorps/Historias last year, as well as joint projects with the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao, the PR Co-op of Singer Songwriters, the Cooperative Movement of Puerto Rico and other local organizations. Radio Huelga, an innovative Internet radio project that grew out of the recent UPR student strike that enjoyed enormous popularity throughout Puerto Rico, retransmits their current weekly program, La Voz del Este, heard each Thursday on WALO Radio, 1240 AM (Humacao, PR) and on the Internet : http://www.waloradio.com/web/
